The Origin and Growth of Tea in India
In the 1830s, the British discovered wild tea in Assam and began cultivating it locally by the 1850s, breaking China’s monopoly on tea. Today, India is one of the world's largest tea producers, with over 70% consumed domestically. Famous varieties like Assam and Darjeeling are grown exclusively here. The Indian tea industry now owns global brands and stands as one of the most advanced in the world.
